The Philadelphia Flyers are internally evaluating a potential trade for Edmonton Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse this offseason. According to Philadelphia insider Anthony SanFilippo, the Flyers have discussed the idea of acquiring the 31-year-old blueliner, though no formal talks with the Oilers have occurred yet.
Nurse has a full no-trade clause through the 2026-27 season but has reportedly approved several teams, including Philadelphia, as potential destinations. This opens the door for the Flyers to pursue a move for a veteran presence on the blue line. Nurse has recorded 38 points in 82 games over the past two seasons and brings size, experience, and defensive stability to any team.
Philadelphia’s blue line currently lacks veteran leadership with uncertainty surrounding Rasmus Ristolainen’s future. The Flyers have several top defensive prospects such as Oliver Bonk, Spencer Gill, Hunter McDonald, and Ty Murchison, but most are still years away from regular NHL action. Adding Nurse could help bridge the gap while those young players develop.
Financially, the Flyers are in a strong position to absorb Nurse’s contract. Philadelphia has approximately $37 million in cap space for the 2026-27 season, meaning they can take on Nurse’s full $9.25 million cap hit without requiring Edmonton to retain salary. This flexibility could make the trade more attractive for the Oilers, who have struggled to move the contract in past seasons.
Owen Tippett could also enter the conversation. The 26-year-old forward, who has scored 28 goals over the past two seasons, has been linked to the Oilers in recent weeks. A trade involving both Nurse and Tippett would be complex, as Philadelphia would likely demand additional assets in return for Tippett’s offensive upside and contract.

With the salary cap expected to rise significantly over the next few seasons, Nurse’s contract may become more manageable for teams like the Flyers. The Oilers could benefit from moving a high-salary player while adding a young, productive forward in Tippett.
At this stage, the Flyers have not engaged the Oilers in formal talks. But the mere fact that Philadelphia is considering the move suggests serious interest. If the Oilers look to retool their roster, the Flyers could be one of the few teams capable of offering a fair return for Nurse’s contract.
