The Detroit Red Wings are expected to part ways with five of their unrestricted free agents this offseason, including goaltender Cam Talbot and forward James van Riemsdyk. According to Kevin Allen of Detroit Hockey Now, Cam Talbot, Erik Gustafsson, David Perron, Travis Hamonic, and James van Riemsdyk will not be offered contract extensions and are projected to seek opportunities elsewhere this summer.
The move is part of a broader rebuild led by general manager Steve Yzerman, who has signaled a shift toward a younger and faster roster. All five players are 34 or older and have shown declining production in recent seasons. Hamonic, 36, recorded just 23 points in 81 games last season while Gustafsson, 34, contributed 19 points in 78 games. Van Riemsdyk, 34, was the most surprising name on the list, as he managed 31 points in 72 games, but his contract flexibility and cap hit of $4.5 million likely made him a target for a trade.
Talbot, 33, who posted a .902 save percentage and 2.48 goals-against average in 35 games last season, is expected to be replaced by younger netminders. The Red Wings have shown interest in acquiring a top-two goalie ahead of the 2026-27 season, signaling a clear direction for the team’s future.
David Perron, 34, who notched 14 goals and 32 points in 78 games, will likely seek more consistent ice time with another team. His $4.25 million cap hit is a significant chunk for a team looking to add more affordable depth.
With five veterans departing, the Red Wings could create cap space and open roster spots for younger players. Patrick Kane, another pending UFA, may now be in position to receive a new deal. Kane, who signed a one-year contract worth $3 million, could see negotiations for a longer-term deal if the team sees value in retaining his veteran presence.

Yzerman’s comments in recent media appearances have confirmed the direction of the rebuild. “We’re not afraid to make tough decisions,” he said. “This team needs to evolve.”
The next step for the Red Wings is finalizing which players will be moved and which will hit the open market. The NHL free agency window opens July 10, giving teams until then to make moves. With the rebuild in full swing, Detroit is positioning itself to compete in the long term.
