San Francisco 13, Washington 10 – The Giants completed a stunning comeback on Wednesday night, rallying from an 8-run deficit to win in dramatic fashion. Rookie Bryce Eldridge delivered a walk-off grand slam in the ninth inning, capping a five-run frame that erased Washington’s late lead. The Nationals had extended their advantage to 10-6 in the top of the ninth, but San Francisco responded with a flurry of offense to pull off the improbable win.
Eldridge’s heroics came after Rafael Devers and Matt Chapman hit solo home runs in the bottom of the eighth to cut the deficit to three. Jung Hoo Lee singled to load the bases for Eldridge, who deposited a 2-0 slider from Mitchell Parker into the right field seats at Nationals Park. The Giants improved to 29-34 on the season, while Washington fell to 31-32.
Tyler Callihan made a name for himself in his big-league debut with a career-high two home runs for the Pirates in a 13-10 win over the Dodgers. Callihan’s first MLB home run came off Shohei Ohtani in the fourth inning, and he later launched a three-run shot off Kyle Hurt in the eighth to help erase a two-run deficit. Pittsburgh scored eight runs in its final two at-bats to complete the comeback, improving to 26-37 on the season.
Max Scherzer returned to the mound for the Blue Jays against the Phillies and picked up four strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings. The veteran right-hander now has 3,503 strikeouts for his career, placing him 11th on the all-time list. He needs just seven more strikeouts to surpass Walter Johnson and move into the top 10. Scherzer’s return comes as Toronto continues to evaluate its rotation with the trade deadline approaching.
The Giants will look to build on their momentum when they face the Nationals again on Thursday. The Pirates head to Milwaukee to continue their series with the Brewers, while the Blue Jays will try to rebound against the Phillies in game two.
