The Chicago White Sox edged the Atlanta Braves 5-4 in 10 innings behind a walk-off home run from rookie Braden Montgomery while the Oakland Athletics tied their franchise record with 12 home runs in two games. Ronald Acuna Jr. left the game with left hamstring tightness, adding injury concerns for the Braves.
Braden Montgomery made his MLB debut in dramatic fashion. The top White Sox prospect delivered a game-winning home run in his first career at-bat in the 10th inning. Montgomery also recorded his first hit in his second at-bat, driving in Jacob Gonzalez. The rookie became the fifth player in MLB history to hit a walk-off home run in his debut.
Ronald Acuna Jr. left the game in the fourth inning after suffering left hamstring tightness. The Braves star was diagnosed with the same injury in early May and missed several weeks. Manager Walt Weiss said the injury appears less severe than the previous one. Acuna will undergo an MRI on Wednesday. “It doesn’t seem as bad as the last one,” Weiss said. “We’re not eyeing an IL [stint] on him right now, but day to day.”
The Oakland Athletics continued their power surge in Las Vegas. After hitting seven home runs in an extra-innings loss on Monday, the A’s added five more on Tuesday to tie the franchise record for home runs in a two-game span. Outfielder Henry Bolte hit his first career home run in the second inning off lefty Robert Gasser. Bolte has posted a 114 wRC+ in 25 games as a rookie.
Shohei Ohtani continued to dominate on the mound. The White Sox ace allowed zero earned runs in his latest start, extending his season ERA to 0.84. Ohtani’s performance was a key factor in Chicago’s win. On the other side, Jared Jones bounced back from a shaky season debut with five scoreless innings against the Astros in his last start.
The Athletics remain in Las Vegas for four more games this week. The Braves will monitor Acuna’s condition over the next 48 hours. The White Sox will look to build on their momentum as they continue their road trip.
