The San Francisco Giants are reportedly shifting toward a sell mode at the July 31 trade deadline but have no plans to move ace pitcher Logan Webb. With a 29-43 record and just 2.7% playoff odds according to FanGraphs, the club is exploring trade opportunities for impending free agents like Luis Arraez and Robbie Ray. However, Webb remains untouchable as the team's franchise cornerstone.
The Giants have started “testing the waters” and “putting out feelers” on potential trade candidates, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. Infielder Arraez and left-hander Ray are expected to be available, while third baseman Matt Chapman could also be considered. The Giants have already signed four eight-figure free agents this off-season and are paying $10.5 million for their manager this year, yet they remain 12 games under .500 and nine games back of a playoff spot.
Arraez has been a standout this season, hitting .319 with nine Outs Above Average at second base. That’s a dramatic improvement from his 2024 campaign where he batted .292 while playing mostly first base. His $12 million deal has $4 million remaining on the season, and teams like the Rays, Dodgers, and Rangers could be interested in his contact-oriented bat.
Robbie Ray, a former Cy Young award winner, is not the same pitcher after Tommy John surgery cost him much of the past two seasons. This year, he has a 4.42 ERA with a 21% strikeout rate and 11.5% walk rate. His 5.26 FIP and 4.82 SIERA indicate he's overperforming his results. With $25 million left on his deal and only $8 million remaining through the deadline, Ray’s trade value is limited.
Logan Webb stands out as the one player the Giants will not move. The 29-year-old is signed through 2028 and has been one of the best pitchers in baseball. He is a local product who grew up in Rocklin, California and was drafted and developed by the Giants. Trading him would signal a deeper rebuild, but the team is hoping to add young talent this summer and compete again in 2027.
Matt Chapman is another name being floated in trade discussions. The 33-year-old has a full no-trade clause and is owed $25 million annually through 2030. While his recent .261/.348/.414 slash line has improved his trade value, moving him would be a challenge. The Giants may be trying to clear payroll and open up third base for Casey Schmitt, who has shown better defensive metrics at the hot corner.
The Giants have few other appealing trade options. Adrian Houser and Harrison Bader have underwhelming 2026 seasons and expensive contracts. Sam Hentges and Eric Haase have minimal trade value. With seven weeks to go until the deadline, the Giants are expected to continue shopping their assets while protecting their young core and star pitcher Logan Webb.
