
The Los Angeles Angels have re-signed right-handed pitcher Shaun Anderson to a minor league deal. The 31-year-old will return to Triple-A Salt Lake on a non-roster basis. Anderson is now on his sixth such deal with the organization since the start of the 2022 season.
Anderson’s return to Salt Lake follows the same pattern as previous transactions. The Angels must select his contract, hold him on the 40-man roster for a few days, then designate him for assignment. He clears waivers, becomes a free agent, and signs a new minor league contract. This process has become a recurring storyline for the Halos and is not unique to them. The Atlanta Braves have used a similar approach with Carlos Carrasco all season.
Anderson has pitched in 16 MLB games over the past two seasons, logging 28 innings with a 7.71 ERA. Despite the struggles, he has remained a valuable asset in the Angels’ long-relief corps. This year, Anderson has also started four of his seven Triple-A appearances, showing flexibility in his role.
The right-hander has a 6.35 career ERA in the majors over parts of six seasons. At the Triple-A level, Anderson has posted a 4.34 ERA over eight seasons. His ability to start or come out of the bullpen gives the Angels another option as they continue to manage their rotation and relief mix.
By keeping Anderson in the system, the Angels maintain a familiar name on their depth chart. They also avoid using a 40-man roster spot for a player who is unlikely to be a long-term fixture in the majors. The move allows them to evaluate his performance without a significant financial commitment.
Anderson has not shied away from the process, re-signing each time he clears waivers. His willingness to stay in the system speaks to his commitment to remaining in the majors in some capacity. For now, his focus is on contributing at the Triple-A level and earning another opportunity to pitch in the big leagues.
The Angels continue to monitor their roster as they prepare for the final stretch of the season. Anderson’s next step is to perform well in Salt Lake and remain ready for potential call-ups. The team has until the end of the season to make any final roster decisions.
