The Los Angeles Angels have added right-handed reliever Alex Faedo to their organization on a minor league contract. The 30-year-old was recently unclaimed on waivers and is currently assigned to the team’s Arizona Complex League affiliate. Faedo will begin working his way back into game shape before potentially advancing to Triple-A Salt Lake.
Faedo was selected in the first round of the 2017 MLB Draft by the Detroit Tigers. Over three MLB seasons, the 6’6” righty posted a 4.51 ERA across 175 1/3 innings. After moving to the bullpen in 2024, he improved his strikeout rate and posted a 3.61 ERA over 54 1/3 innings. Despite that, he was designated for assignment during the 2024-25 offseason.
The Rays acquired Faedo in a minor trade but did not see any production from the righty. Faedo was placed on the injured list in April 2024 with a shoulder issue and remained there for the entire season. Tampa Bay placed him on waivers at the start of the 2025 offseason when the injured list expired. He went unclaimed and entered minor league free agency.
The Angels’ bullpen has struggled this season, ranking second in the American League with a 5.41 ERA. They are 15th in strikeout rate but 11th in walks issued, highlighting a lack of control among their relief pitchers. Adding Faedo gives the organization a potential high-upside arm with MLB experience.
Faedo’s contract does not count against the Angels’ 40-man roster. The team has room to add him to the major league roster if he progresses quickly through the minors. Detroit and Tampa Bay each received minimal value in their trades involving Faedo. The Angels now have a chance to see if he can regain the form that made him a first-round pick.
The next step for Faedo is to build strength and velocity in the Arizona Complex. If he shows improvement, he could be promoted to Salt Lake as early as June. The Angels have until the end of the season to evaluate him and decide if he is ready for a major league return.
