The Atlanta Braves have re-signed right-handed pitcher Carlos Carrasco and catcher Maverick Handley to minor league contracts, bringing both back into the organization after they were recently removed from the 40-man roster. The moves come as Atlanta continues to fine-tune its pitching staff and catching depth amid ongoing injuries and roster adjustments.
Carrasco, 39, has been a recurring figure in Atlanta’s rotation and bullpen this season. He made five MLB appearances, pitching 9.0 innings with a 3.00 earned run average. At Triple-A Gwinnett, he has been even sharper, posting a 3.00 ERA across 30.0 innings with a 21% strikeout rate and just a 5.6% walk rate. His return to the organization is expected to provide depth in the rotation or bullpen, especially with Spencer Strider’s injury pushing JR Ritchie into the starting role.
Handley, meanwhile, returns as a backup catcher after being released to make room for Hurston Waldrep’s activation from the 60-day injured list. Handley has played only five games since being claimed off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles in late May. His limited action this season has kept him at the back end of Atlanta’s catching depth chart, behind Drake Baldwin, Sandy León, and Austin Wynns.
Atlanta also activated Baldwin from the injured list, which led to Wynns being outrighted off the 40-man roster. This move opened a roster spot that could allow the Braves to re-add Carrasco to the MLB squad if needed. The team could also use the space to option Anthony Molina back to the minors, giving them flexibility in the starting rotation.
Carrasco’s experience and track record as a starting pitcher could make him a valuable option if Strider’s recovery takes longer than expected. With a 3.00 ERA in Triple-A and his ability to eat innings, he could serve as a bridge between the rotation and bullpen. Handley’s return offers catching insurance, though he is unlikely to see regular action until at least mid-season.
The Braves now have until the end of spring training to finalize their full-season rosters. Players like Carrasco and Handley will compete for spots in Gwinnett, with the hope of earning a call-up if injuries persist. The next game for Atlanta is scheduled for Thursday, as they continue spring training preparations ahead of the regular season.
