The San Francisco Giants are reportedly open to trade offers for star players Rafael Devers, Willy Adames, and Matt Chapman as they continue to struggle through a 29-43 start to the season. With the team looking to reshape its roster ahead of the July 31 deadline, sources indicate that San Francisco is exploring potential deals despite having no interest in moving ace Logan Webb.
Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported that the Giants have begun exploring the possibility of a deadline sale. Although Webb remains untouchable, the team is considering moving Chapman, who is signed for $25 million this season and $100 million in guaranteed money through 2030. Adames is also in play, despite his $10 million salary this year and $28 million annually through 2028.
Impending free agents Luis Arraez and Robbie Ray are also potential trade candidates. Arraez, playing on a $12 million salary, is expected to draw significant interest, while Ray’s $25 million salary makes him a more difficult sell. San Francisco would likely need to absorb a portion of Ray’s contract to facilitate a trade.
Devers, Adames, and Chapman are among the three highest-paid players on the Giants’ roster long term. Devers is under contract for $27.5 million this season and a staggering $211 million over the next seven years. Adames is due $28 million annually for five seasons after this one, and Chapman’s contract includes $100 million in guaranteed money through 2030.
Chapman has had a strong season, hitting .261/.348/.414 while contributing defensively at third base. Adames, meanwhile, is hitting just .229/.274/.418 and has committed 12 errors, the most among MLB shortstops. Devers is struggling offensively, with a .235/.293/.413 line and a career-worst 30.3% strikeout rate.
The Giants have limited roster flexibility, with Devers and 21-year-old Bryce Eldridge locked into key roles. Casey Schmitt, a top defensive infielder, has been forced into left field due to positional constraints. Schmitt has struggled defensively in the outfield, but his versatility could become valuable if Arraez is traded.
Jung Hoo Lee is another high-cost asset, signed for $63 million through 2029. Lee is hitting .331/.364/.445 this season but could opt out after the 2027 season. The Giants may listen to offers on Lee, though no indication suggests a trade is imminent.
With only the Rockies and Royals having worse records than San Francisco, the Giants are far from contention. As the trade deadline approaches, the team’s front office is evaluating its options to reshape a roster that is currently overpaid and underperforming.
