The Milwaukee Brewers have finalized a seven-year, $31 million contract extension with outfield prospect Luis Lara, according to multiple reports. The deal includes three club options and incentives, with the potential total value reaching $79 million. Lara will remain in the minors on optional assignment for now.
Lara, 21, signed with the Brewers in 2022 as an international free agent and received a $1.1 million signing bonus. The 5’7” or 5’8” outfielder has played 447 minor league games with 144 stolen bases and just 17 home runs. This season in Triple-A, he has hit .265 with a 15.8% walk rate and 13% strikeout rate.
This extension continues a trend for the Brewers of locking up top prospects early. In 2023, the club signed outfielder Jackson Chourio to an eight-year, $82 million deal. Earlier this year, they gave Cooper Pratt an eight-year, $50.75 million contract. Lara’s deal is smaller but still significant, reflecting his potential as a defensive standout and leadoff threat.
Baseball America ranks Lara as the Brewers’ fifth-best prospect and 50th overall on its Top 100 list. ESPN recently moved him to fifth in the system. His speed and defensive upside give him a high floor, with his offensive upside still in development.
The Brewers will need to open a 40-man roster spot for Lara, likely by sending an injured player to the 60-day injured list. The club currently has outfield depth with Chourio, Garrett Mitchell, and Sal Frelick, plus Blake Perkins and Christian Yelich contributing. Akil Baddoo and Tyler Black are on optional assignment, and Jett Williams is in Triple-A.
Lara’s deal locks in his services through age 27 with the club options extending to age 30. From a financial standpoint, the deal allows the Brewers to secure Lara’s potential while limiting risk. For Lara, it ensures stability and a guaranteed income, though it caps his upside if he becomes a star.
The Brewers sit at 41-23, second-best in the National League. With a strong outfield group and limited obvious holes, Milwaukee may look to trade from the position ahead of the deadline to add pitching or left-handed hitting. Lara’s arrival could play a role in those discussions.
Spencer Michaelis of the Brewers Fanatic Podcast first reported the deal as roughly $30 million over eight years. Jon Heyman of The New York Post and Jeff Passan of ESPN later confirmed the seven-year, $31 million structure with three club options. Passan also noted Lara will remain in the minors for now.
Julius Thomas, the 28-year-old head coach of Paris Basketball, is drawing NBA interest following a successful 2024-25 season in France. According to reports from Greece, Thomas has received a staff offer from the Portland Trail Blazers, contingent on Tiago Splitter being named the team’s head coach.
