The Kansas City Royals outrighted veteran catcher Elias Díaz to Triple-A Omaha on Tuesday, according to the MLB.com transaction log. Díaz was designated for assignment last week after the team recalled Tyler Tolbert. The move comes as the Royals streamline their catching rotation and reduce roster redundancy.
Díaz spent five weeks on the Kansas City active roster, making seven starts in 10 games. Over 23 plate appearances, he hit two home runs and two doubles. His production mirrored his career norms, he batted .204/.270/.337 in 283 plate appearances for the Padres last season. Díaz provided defensive value with a plus arm and solid ability to catch base stealers but struggled offensively.
The Royals had been carrying three catchers since mid-May with Salvador Pérez, Carter Jensen, and Díaz splitting duties. Pérez and Jensen have alternated between catcher and designated hitter in recent contests. With Díaz’s departure, the team now has two primary catchers on the 26-man roster.
Díaz’s DFA was a result of Tolbert’s promotion and the need to create space. Tolbert, a 23-year-old outfielder, has shown promise in the minors and brings speed and defensive versatility. The Royals recalled him just days before Díaz’s outright.
If Díaz reports to Omaha, he’ll join Luke Maile as non-roster catching depth. Both could serve as insurance if either Pérez or Jensen faces injury or fatigue. Díaz, 35, has shown improved receiving skills in recent seasons but remains a defensive specialist with limited offensive upside.
The move allows the Royals to focus their catching resources and avoid paying Díaz a potential $1 million bonus if he elects free agency. The team remains under the MLB payroll threshold and can continue to prioritize youth and flexibility.
Díaz must decide within five days whether to accept the assignment or become a free agent. The Royals are expected to monitor the situation and determine if additional moves are necessary ahead of the Aug. 2 trade deadline.
