The Colorado Rockies have not yet begun aggressive trade talks but could become sellers in the coming weeks as contenders seek bullpen help and outfield depth. While the team remains 18 games under .500 and outscored by 99 runs, front office president Paul DePodesta told The Denver Post that the Rockies are having "some conversations if there is a potential match" but have not yet canvased the league. The Guardians, Rays, Astros, and Angels are among the teams with interest in adding impact arms or outfielders before the August 3 deadline.
DePodesta said the Rockies have a few "foundational players" they are unlikely to trade but did not name them. Among the most attractive trade chips is power-hitting catcher Hunter Goodman, who is under club control through 2029. The Rockies have historically been hesitant to trade players with long-term control, though ownership has changed little since the Monfort era.
Shortstop Ezequiel Tovar, signed for $51.5 million through 2030, is another name that has drawn speculation. Tovar is hitting .209/.259/.323 this season and has been plagued by poor contact and aggressive at-bats. Despite his defensive value, it is unlikely any team will take on the rest of his contract for a diminished return.
Reliever Antonio Senzatela is the most likely candidate for a trade. The right-hander has transformed from a struggling starter into a quality late-inning arm with a 1.98 ERA in 36 1/3 innings this season. His 97.3 mph average fastball and improved cutter have made him a valuable asset. Senzatela carries a $12 million salary, with $7 million still owed and a $14 million club option for 2027. He could fetch the Rockies a mid-level prospect if a contender wants a rental arm.
Outfielder Jake McCarthy is another name that could draw interest. The 24-year-old is making just $1.525 million and is controllable for two more seasons. McCarthy is batting .282/.324/.453 in 188 plate appearances this year and could be a fit for a team like the Rays, Astros, or Guardians looking for a left fielder. His versatility and upside make him a potential regular in the right system.
The Rockies’ other relievers, Seth Halvorsen, Jimmy Herget, and Brennan Bernardino, are unlikely to net significant returns. Starter additions like Jose Quintana, Michael Lorenzen, and Tomoyuki Sugano have not pitched well enough to attract trade interest from contending teams.
The Rockies have time to evaluate their options before the deadline. With teams like the Rays and Astros still in the playoff mix, the market for relievers and outfielders could heat up in the coming weeks. Colorado will decide whether to prioritize depth or rebuild assets.
