The United States Women’s National Team returns to action with a three-game friendly series against Japan starting April 3 in San Jose. With Sophia Smith back after maternity leave and Tierna Davidson returning from injury, the team is stronger than ever. Emma Hayes aims to rotate players across the three matches to give all key contributors valuable match time against the fifth-ranked Nadeshiko.
Sophia Smith's return brings a potent offensive threat back to the USWNT. The Portland Thorns forward has 33 international goals in just 55 appearances, making her one of the most clinical finishers in the squad. Her presence in the attack gives Hayes more flexibility to experiment with formations and tactics. Alongside her, Davidson returns to central defense after missing time with a knee injury. The Chicago Red Stars defender has started 19 of 20 matches in 2024, making 18 clearances and an average of 1.2 interceptions per game.
Hayes has confirmed her intent to rotate the squad heavily across the three matches. With only one natural left back on the roster, the manager will test different options in that role. “We want to give everyone a chance to play and show what they can do,” Hayes said. “These games are about building for the future and keeping our team fresh.”
Japan enters the series with a coaching change that has created some uncertainty. Former manager Futoshi Ikeda was replaced by Tetsuo Sugiyama, who has limited international coaching experience. The Nadeshiko have won 14 of their last 16 games under Ikeda but will now have to adjust to a new system quickly. Their last match was a 1-0 win over Germany in late March, their first of 2024.
The three-game series will take place in San Jose, Seattle, and Denver, giving the USWNT a chance to test different environments and fan bases. The games are part of a broader April international window that includes matches against Brazil and Mexico. The USWNT is coming off a 2-1-1 start to 2024, with key wins over Germany and Japan in previous meetings.
With the 2024 Olympic cycle in mind, these friendlies are crucial for team development. Hayes will look to build depth and test new combinations while managing the workload of star players. The first match kicks off April 3 at PayPal Park, where the USWNT will aim to make a strong statement in their return to international competition.

Washington Wizards forward Alex Sarr will miss the final three games of the 2023-24 season with a toe injury. Head coach Brian Keefe confirmed the news on Thursday, stating that a return is unlikely given the limited time remaining in the regular season.
