Washington Wizards forward Alex Sarr will miss the final three games of the 2023-24 season with a toe injury. Head coach Brian Keefe confirmed the news on Thursday, stating that a return is unlikely given the limited time remaining in the regular season.
Sarr has been sidelined for the past six games due to capsulitis in his left big toe. The 20-year-old rookie is entering the final stretch of his rookie season, one that has already seen him make a significant impact for the Wizards. His absence will be felt as Washington looks to close the season with a strong finish.
"It's probably unlikely that he comes back with the short amount of time that we have here," Keefe said. The coach emphasized the team's focus on managing the injury to ensure Sarr is healthy for the 2024-25 season.
In 48 games this year, Sarr has averaged 16.3 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. He has also shot 41.5% from the field and 32.7% from three-point range. His ability to stretch the floor and defend multiple positions has made him a key part of Washington's rotation.
Sarr’s injury adds to a growing list of challenges for the Wizards, who are currently in the thick of the Eastern Conference playoff race. The team has had to rely on a deep roster and strong performances from veterans like Bradley Beal and Kristaps Porziņģis to stay competitive.
Without Sarr, the Wizards will need contributions from their bench to maintain their momentum. Players like Sam Cassell Jr. and D'Anthony Bennett could see increased minutes in the coming days.
Washington’s next game is on Saturday against the Cleveland Cavaliers at home. The Wizards are currently sitting at a 36-34 record, just a game behind the sixth seed in the East. Every game from here on out could be crucial in determining their playoff seeding.
Dink Pate, the former G League Ignite standout and Westchester Knicks affiliate, committed to Providence on Thursday. His agent confirmed the decision to ESPN, marking a major addition for the Friars under new head coach Bryan Hodgson.
