Columbus Crew head coach Henrik Rydström is embracing a bold, no-regrets approach as he tries to refresh and revitalize the franchise following a winless start to the 2026 MLS season. Rydström, who joined the team in January, finally secured his first victory last weekend with a win at Atlanta United.
The Swedish coach, known for his intellectual approach and unorthodox style, has already made waves with his philosophy and tactics. Columbus has earned four points from their first six games, including draws against Kansas City and Orlando City, though they have yet to win at home. Rydström has shifted the team’s formation and redefined roles for key players like Diego Rossi and Max Arfsten, a move that has caused some fan frustration but is part of a larger long-term strategy.
Rydström’s background is as colorful as his coaching style. He earned a master’s degree in literature while playing for Kalmar FF and wrote music reviews for a local newspaper. His preferred style of play draws from the concepts of “relationism,” a model inspired by Brazilian manager Fernando Diniz. “We try to create chaos,” Rydström once said. He also wants a team that plays like “a f--king rock band.”
Arriving in Columbus, Rydström faced the difficult task of following Wilfried Nancy, who led the Crew to MLS Cup and Leagues Cup titles. Rydström acknowledges the challenge of moving forward without losing sight of the past. “You can be proud over your past, but how can we actually challenge ourselves in it?” he said. “That is something I hope that I can help us do.”
Family matters have also played a role in Rydström’s early struggles. His father passed away shortly after he signed with the Crew, and his immigration paperwork delayed his arrival for preseason. His partner and children only joined him in Columbus last weekend.
Despite the early hurdles, Rydström is focused on the long game. “It's this balance between chasing something short-term and building something long-term,” he explained. “If we look at underlying numbers, we could have had like four or five more points.”
Columbus will look to build on their first win when they host Orlando City this Sunday in a Sunday Night Soccer match at ScottsMiracle-Gro Field. The Crew will aim to continue evolving their identity under Rydström’s leadership, with the hope of breaking into the top of the Eastern Conference.

The San Antonio Spurs edged the Dallas Mavericks 114-109 on Friday night, but the story was not the win. It was Victor Wembanyama’s 40-point, 13-rebound performance in just 26 minutes, a calculated move to reach the 65-game threshold required for regular-season award eligibility.
