Joel Embiid was released from a Houston-area hospital on Friday following an appendectomy he underwent the previous day. The Sixers did not provide a timetable for his return, leaving fans and analysts with more questions than answers as the team heads into the final stretch of the regular season.
Ebiid, who entered the 2023-24 season as a top MVP candidate and a key player in the Sixers’ playoff push, has been sidelined since early March with a knee injury. His absence has already hurt Philadelphia’s chances, as the team has gone 1-3 in his absence. Now, an unforeseen medical issue threatens to further derail their playoff hopes.
The Sixers currently sit in eighth place in the Eastern Conference with a 32-35 record, just one game ahead of the Miami Heat for the final playoff spot. With only one regular-season game remaining, the team is in a precarious position. Without Embiid, their offensive production drops significantly, from 118.6 points per game with him on the floor to 107.2 when he’s sidelined.
Coach Nick Nurse addressed the situation on Friday, saying, "It is a tough blow. I think that the biggest thing right now is that Joel comes out of the surgery as best as possible and all that goes well. That's where most of my thoughts are right now."
Ebiid averaged 29.4 points, 11.6 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game this season, shooting 52.3% from the field. His absence has been especially felt in the paint, where the Sixers have struggled to maintain defensive consistency. Philly’s defensive rating drops from 109.5 to 115.7 when Embiid is out.
The team’s final regular-season game is on Saturday against the Orlando Magic. A win would secure the eighth seed and home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs. However, with Embiid out indefinitely, the Sixers will need to rely on a young core that includes Paul George, Tyrese Maxey, and De’Anthony Melton to step up.
The Sixers have shown resilience this season, but the loss of their franchise player adds another layer of uncertainty. Nurse and his staff will need to adjust quickly to a new game plan, while the front office may be weighing trade options or draft strategies as the season winds down.
Next up, the Sixers will look to close out the regular season on Saturday. For now, all eyes remain on Embiid’s recovery.

The San Antonio Spurs edged the Dallas Mavericks 114-109 on Friday night, but the story was not the win. It was Victor Wembanyama’s 40-point, 13-rebound performance in just 26 minutes, a calculated move to reach the 65-game threshold required for regular-season award eligibility.
