The New York Knicks pulled off a stunning 22-point comeback to defeat the Cleveland Cavaliers 106-105 in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals while the San Antonio Spurs edged the Oklahoma City Thunder in a high-scoring Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals. Meanwhile, the Dallas Mavericks fired coach Jason Kidd and named Jamahl Mosley as his replacement.
The Knicks' historic rally in Cleveland marked the largest comeback in franchise playoff history. Down 62-40 at halftime, New York outscored the Cavaliers 66-43 in the second half behind Jalen Brunson's 30 points and 11 assists. Donte DiVincenzo hit five three-pointers and scored 20 points off the bench as the Knicks erased a 22-point deficit for the first time in NBA history. “That’s the kind of team we are,” Brunson said after the game. “We don’t quit.”
In the West, Victor Wembanyama led the Spurs to a 129-127 overtime win over the Thunder in a Game 1 thriller. The rookie sensation scored 31 points on 13-of-19 shooting with 14 rebounds and six blocks. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander answered with 41 points for Oklahoma City, but the Spurs held on thanks to a defensive stand in the final 90 seconds. Wembanyama’s 31-point performance was the most by a Spurs rookie in a playoff game since David Robinson in 1989.
The Dallas Mavericks made a major coaching change on Monday, firing Jason Kidd after a third-round exit in the playoffs. Kidd had led the team for three seasons, compiling a 101-101 record in the regular season and leading them to the 2024 Western Conference Finals. The team announced Jamahl Mosley as his replacement, bringing in the former Brooklyn assistant coach who helped guide the Nets to the 2023 Eastern Conference Finals. “We’re excited to have a coach who understands modern NBA basketball,” Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said.
Mosley inherits a team that lost key free agents this offseason and is expected to build around Luka Doncic. His hiring marks the first time in franchise history the Mavericks have hired a Black head coach.
The Knicks look to take a 2-0 series lead in Game 2 on Thursday in Cleveland. The Spurs host Game 2 against the Thunder on Tuesday in San Antonio. The Mavericks will begin Mosley’s tenure with training camp set to open in late June.
