Jalen Duren’s impressive season has paid off in more ways than one. The Detroit Pistons forward was named to the All-NBA Third Team for the 2025–26 season and is now eligible to sign a max contract this offseason. Duren’s performance has elevated his market value, making him one of the most coveted restricted free agents heading into July 1.
Duren can now sign a five-year, $287 million contract with the Pistons. The deal would start at 30% of the salary cap, projected at $49.5 million for the 2026–27 season. That’s a significant jump from the five-year, $239 million deal he would have been eligible for before his All-NBA nod.
The new contract comes with 8% annual raises, making it one of the most lucrative deals available under current cap rules. If the Pistons match another team’s offer, they could lock up Duren through the 2031–32 season. His current rookie deal is set to expire after the 2025–26 season.
Other teams can only offer Duren a four-year, $177.4 million deal. That contract would start at $42.25 million and include 5% annual raises. The difference in length and cap percentage gives Detroit a clear advantage in retaining their rising star.
Duren, 21, has emerged as a cornerstone for the Pistons. He averaged 21.5 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game last season. His defensive versatility and improved shooting have made him a two-way threat. Making the All-NBA Third Team is a validation of his breakout season.
Detroit’s front office has shown commitment to building around Duren. The team made a strong push in the 2024 draft and has been aggressive in developing its young core. Retaining Duren would solidify their plans for the next five years.
The Pistons hold a restricted free agency tag on Duren. Other teams can begin negotiations after the 2026 NBA Finals. All teams can start talks with free agents on June 30 at 6 PM ET. Duren is expected to be in Detroit for the final weeks of the season before making a decision.
What happens next will shape the Pistons’ future. If Duren signs the max deal, Detroit becomes a legitimate contender in the Eastern Conference. If he leaves, the team will face a difficult rebuild. The July 1 deadline looms large for one of the NBA’s most important restricted free agents.
