The Dallas Mavericks are fielding trade interest in Kyrie Irving this offseason, even as the franchise continues to build around Cooper Flagg as its cornerstone. Despite speculation about Irving’s future, there is no indication Dallas is actively shopping its nine-time All-Star point guard. With a new front office led by Masai Ujiri and Mike Schmitz, and a coaching vacancy still to be filled, Irving’s role in Dallas remains a topic of intrigue.
Irving sat out the entire 2025-26 season while recovering from a torn ACL suffered in March 2025. The 30-year-old is expected to be full strength for training camp in the fall of 2026 and ready for the start of the 2026-27 season. His return will be a major storyline for the Mavericks, who hope he can pair with Flagg to form a dynamic backcourt.
Ujiri has publicly expressed excitement about Irving playing alongside Flagg next season. “We’re excited to see Kyrie and Cooper on the court together,” Ujiri said. “Kyrie brings experience, leadership, and elite playmaking. Cooper brings the future.”
Irving is under contract through the 2027-28 season with an average annual salary of $32.3 million. His deal includes a player option for 2028-29, giving Dallas and Irving flexibility in the coming seasons. The Mavericks have the cap space to retain him, but the presence of trade inquiries suggests they could consider a move if it bolsters their roster.
Irving’s last full season on the court came in 2023-24, when he averaged 21.9 points, 5.4 assists, and 4.6 rebounds per game. His three-point shooting dipped to 29.9% from beyond the arc, a career low. However, he still created value with his ball-handling and clutch performance in high-pressure moments.
Flagg, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, averaged 18.2 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 4.5 assists in his rookie season. His development will be critical as Dallas aims to build a contender around him. Irving’s return could either complement Flagg or serve as a trade asset depending on how the team’s vision evolves.
With the new front office in place and a coaching search underway, Dallas is expected to finalize its direction by mid-August. That timeline will determine whether Irving is traded or stays as a key piece in the Mavericks’ future.
