San Francisco 49ers fullback Kyle Juszczyk is frustrated with the lack of respect Brock Purdy continues to receive despite the quarterback's impressive body of work. Purdy, the 2022 Mr. Irrelevant, has gone 30-15 as a starter in parts of four seasons, completing 67.9% of his passes for 84 touchdowns in 45 starts.
Juszczyk told Jim Rome recently that he doesn’t know what it will take for Purdy to get the recognition he deserves. “I don’t know what it’s gonna take for this guy to finally get the respect I think he truly deserves,” Juszczyk said. “Because season in, season out, he plays tremendously.”
Purdy’s numbers support Juszczyk’s claim. Since taking over as the 49ers’ starter in 2022, he has averaged 238.5 yards per game while playing a key role in the 49ers’ run to the NFC Championship Game in his rookie season. He also earned a Pro Bowl nod in 2023 and led the league in postseason wins with five.
Despite that, many still question whether Purdy’s success is a product of Kyle Shanahan’s scheme and the talent around him. He also has had games where turnovers have derailed the team, including a costly performance in the 2025 season finale against the Seattle Seahawks, a 13-3 loss.
Juszczyk believes Purdy is more than just the sum of his parts. “I’m sure, just as a human, there's that tiny, tiny sliver” of criticism that gets to Purdy, Juszczyk said. “But Brock does such an incredible job of blocking out the noise.”
Purdy has also faced criticism as a result of his draft status. He was the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft but has since become the most successful Mr. Irrelevant in NFL history. Juszczyk thinks that fact is used against him. “I don’t know if it’s just the fact that he’s not a first-round draft pick,” he said. “Like, if that is just gonna be the story for his entire career and be kinda held against him? Maybe.”
Still, Juszczyk stands by Purdy. “I love the guy, as a person, as my quarterback, as a football player. He is the dude.”
With Purdy under contract and set to lead the 49ers into the 2026 season, the focus will remain on whether he can continue to silence the doubters and lead San Francisco back to the Super Bowl.
