Alberts Smits, the second-ranked international skater for the 2026 NHL Draft, has been named the recipient of the E.J. McGuire Award of Excellence. The honor recognizes a player who displays strength of character, competitiveness, and athleticism. Smits is the top international defenseman in the draft class and is poised to make history.
Smits, from Valmiera, Latvia, had an impressive season playing for Jukurit in Finland's Liiga. He recorded 6 goals and 7 assists in 38 games. His performance continued with a loan to Munchen in Germany's DEL, where he added 2 goals and 4 assists in 11 playoff games. His strong play earned him a spot on Latvia’s Olympic roster for the 2026 Winter Games.
Smits can become the 11th player and third active player to be drafted in the first round after playing in the Olympics the same year. He also has the chance to be the highest-selected Latvian player in NHL history. That record is currently held by Zemgus Girgensons, who was taken 14th overall by the Buffalo Sabres in 2012.
“Alberts Smits emerged as one of the standout young defensemen in the 2026 Draft class,” said Dan Marr, Director of NHL Central Scouting. “Playing in Finland’s Liiga then transferring to Germany’s DEL to finish the season with Munchen, he was an impactful player utilizing his skills and assets with a poised demeanor that made him look like a seasoned pro rather than a teenager.”

Smits was presented with an engraved NHL crystal during the first intermission of Game 4 of the 2026 Stanley Cup Final at T-Mobile Arena. His maturity and controlled play under pressure were also on display with Latvia’s 2026 World Junior team and most recently at the 2026 IIHF World Championships.

Smits has the talent and character to succeed in the NHL. His ability to play a responsible two-way game and his poise on the ice make him a highly sought-after prospect. Scouts project him as a potential top-10 pick in the 2026 Draft.
Smits will look to continue his strong play as the 2026 NHL Draft approaches in June. His performance on the international stage and in men’s leagues has set the stage for a historic selection.
