The Edmonton Oilers' early exit from the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs has reignited trade speculation surrounding Connor McDavid. Less than 24 hours after the Oilers fell to the Anaheim Ducks in a first-round upset, mock trade scenarios have already surfaced, including one that would send McDavid to the San Jose Sharks.
FanDuel recently proposed a blockbuster deal that would send McDavid to San Jose in exchange for Macklin Celebrini, William Eklund, Michael Misa, two first-round picks, and a second-round pick. The mock trade suggests a potential reunion between McDavid and Celebrini, who played together on Team Canada during the 2025 IIHF World Championship.
McDavid, who signed a two-year, $25 million extension in October, just completed a historic season. He recorded 138 points (48 goals, 90 assists) in the regular season and added six points in six playoff games. At 29 years old, he remains the gold standard for offensive production in the NHL.
The idea of McDavid leaving Edmonton has not been dismissed outright. In a bold statement, FanDuel wrote: “Connor McDavid might NEVER win a Cup in Edmonton. As crazy as it sounds ... should the Oilers consider trading him to the Sharks if things go south next year?” The statement reflects growing frustration with the Oilers’ recent underperformance.
The Sharks, led by 19-year-old sensation Macklin Celebrini, who is projected as a top-five pick for 2026, represent a team on the rise. Celebrini, who played 78 games for the U.S. National Team Development Program in 2024-25, finished with 52 goals and 32 assists. His elite skating and offensive instincts make him a perfect fit alongside McDavid.

William Eklund, a top-10 prospect for the 2025 NHL Draft, could be a valuable asset for the Oilers. The 18-year-old Swedish center recorded 42 goals and 34 assists for HV71 in the SHL this season. Michael Misa, a 20-year-old forward, also fits as a high-end prospect with a strong two-way game.
The Oilers have not publicly addressed trade speculation, but the summer ahead will be pivotal. McDavid is entering the first year of his extension, and his commitment to Edmonton will be closely watched. If he does seek a change, the Sharks could be a prime landing spot.
Next up: The NHL Draft on June 28 will bring new clarity on the future of several teams involved in McDavid’s potential move.
