The Cardiff Devils edged the Genting Casino Coventry Blaze 2-1 in the first leg of their Elite League Playoff Quarter-Final at the Skydome Arena on Saturday. The narrow victory gives the Devils a one-goal advantage heading into the second leg at the Vindico Arena on Sunday.
Coventry welcomed back defenceman Colton Saucerman, who returned after missing the final weekend of the regular season with an injury. Mat Robson started in goal for the Blaze, while the Devils named Christian Stoever between the pipes. The match began with both teams cautiously feeling their way into the game. Neither side could produce a clear scoring chance in the opening ten minutes.
The Blaze broke the deadlock at 14:40 when Jere Vertanen created space in the offensive zone before feeding Grayson Constable, who finished with a clinical slap-shot to give Coventry the lead. Cardiff challenged for offside on the play but was unsuccessful.
Robson made two key saves on Riley Brandt and helped the Blaze kill the first penalty to preserve the 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission. The visitors responded early in the second period, tying the game at 1-1 at 25:45 when Evan Mosey found the back of the net. Kristoff Kontos and Cole Sanford earned the assists on the goal.

Cardiff took the lead at 31:51 after strong work behind the net. Kontos finished a setup from Nolan Yaremko and Sanford to make it 2-1. Coventry then killed a late penalty in the second period and entered the third down by one.
The Devils controlled the opening minutes of the third period, killing a penalty and tightening their defensive structure. As the clock ticked down, the Blaze struggled to generate quality chances. Cardiff had a late powerplay opportunity but could not extend their lead.

The Devils outshot the Blaze 32-27 in the game. Robson made 30 saves while Stoever stopped 26 shots. Constable led all scorers with a goal and an assist, while Kontos added a goal and an assist for Cardiff.
The series now shifts to the Vindico Arena for the second and deciding leg on Sunday. The first team to win two games advances to the next round of the playoffs.

The San Antonio Spurs edged the Dallas Mavericks 114-109 on Friday night, but the story was not the win. It was Victor Wembanyama’s 40-point, 13-rebound performance in just 26 minutes, a calculated move to reach the 65-game threshold required for regular-season award eligibility.
