The Fort Wayne Komets’ attempt to tie the Western Conference Final fell short on Tuesday night as the Kansas City Mavericks secured a 4-2 victory at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum. The loss drops Fort Wayne to 3-1 in the series with Game 5 looming on the horizon.
The Komets struck first in the game when Austin Magera scored with just seconds remaining in the first period. Magera’s lone goal of the night came off a loose puck at the Kansas City blueline, finding the back of the net with a powerful shot past Dylan Wells.
The second period turned the game in Kansas City’s favor. The Mavericks outscored Fort Wayne 3-0 in the frame, including two goals on the power play. Kansas City’s special teams dominated, converting both of their opportunities while killing off all four Komets’ chances.
The Komets tried to claw back in the third period. William Dufour scored on a power play at 5:35 to cut the deficit to one. Dufour’s goal was the only one of the period for Fort Wayne, while Kansas City sealed the win with an empty-net goal late.
Sam Jonsson took the loss, finishing with 20 saves on 24 shots. Wells stopped 22 of 24 shots for the Mavericks, who outshot the Komets 24-10 in the game.
With the win, Kansas City takes a commanding 3-1 series lead. The Mavericks have now won four straight after dropping the first game of the series. Fort Wayne has struggled to find consistency in the playoffs, posting a 3-4 record in the postseason so far.

The pivotal moments came in the second period when Kansas City’s power play ignited its offense. The Mavericks’ ability to capitalize on penalties gave them the momentum they needed to control the game.
The series now shifts back to Kansas City for Game 5 on Friday. The Mavericks are just one win away from a return to the Kelly Cup Finals. With the Komets needing two wins, the pressure is mounting in Fort Wayne.
The Komets will look to find a spark and end the Mavericks’ surge. With Magera and Dufour leading the way offensively, Fort Wayne will need more production from its top line to stay alive.
