The Montreal Canadiens handed the Carolina Hurricanes a 6-2 defeat in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Final. The Habs scored four goals in the first 11 minutes and 30 seconds of the game and never looked back, handing the Hurricanes their first loss of the postseason.
Carolina entered the series as heavy favorites after going undefeated through the first two rounds. But Montreal’s quick start set the tone, as the Canadiens outshot the Hurricanes 10-2 in the first period and built a 4-0 lead before the 12-minute mark. The Hurricanes, known for their suffocating defensive system, struggled to contain Montreal’s counterattack strategy.
The Habs finished with 42 shots on goal, including five breakaways, an alarming stat for a team that prides itself on limiting scoring chances. “Anytime you give up five breakaways in a game, there’s something going on,” Hurricanes assistant coach Scott Jarvis said. “You can’t give a team like that that many chances and expect not to be burned.”
Defenseman Jaccob Slavin was among those most criticized after the game. “Personally, I think I handed them the game,” Slavin admitted. “And so I’ve got to be better.” Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind’Amour echoed that sentiment, saying, “He had a tough one. I’ve never seen that… Eight years.”
The loss snapped a 12-game winning streak for Carolina, which had outscored opponents 15-8 in regular-season matchups with Montreal. With Thursday’s result, Montreal now holds a 21-10 edge in the teams’ head-to-head history this season.

Jordan Staal, who has been a stabilizing force for the Hurricanes, admitted the team lacked respect for Montreal’s offensive firepower. “Obviously, giving that many freebies, any team’s going to make you pay, especially this time of year,” Staal said. “There wasn’t enough respect for them. They played a great game and they were ready to roll, and we weren’t.”
The Hurricanes will look to bounce back in Game 2, which will be critical for maintaining their playoff momentum. The series now shifts to Montreal, where the Habs will look to build on their confidence and put pressure on a suddenly vulnerable Carolina team.
