The Colorado Avalanche’s shocking four-game sweep at the hands of the Vegas Golden Knights has thrown the team’s future into question, with mounting speculation about the future of head coach Jared Bednar and general manager Chris MacFarland. After winning the President’s Trophy this season, the Avalanche’s swift exit from the Western Conference Final has opened the door for internal changes as the organization looks for accountability.
Bednar, who led Colorado to the Presidents’ Trophy last season, is now under heavy scrutiny. According to insider Chris Johnston on his podcast, The Chris Johnston Show, “There’ll probably be a coaching discussion in Colorado if this goes the way it looks like it’s going and I do think there’ll be some tweaking to the roster.” The Avalanche’s inability to adjust against Vegas, which outscored Colorado 16-4 in the series, has led to questions about whether Bednar’s system is misaligned with the team’s personnel.
MacFarland, who has served as general manager since the 2022 season, may also face pressure. Elliotte Friedman’s 32 Thoughts reported that while there is no current deal in place, Nashville could be considering MacFarland as a potential successor to David Poile. “When that Chris MacFarland thing came out, that is one of the things I’ve been wondering about, if Nashville is waiting to talk to him; I do not believe there is any deal…in place or anything close.”
Despite the Avalanche’s high-powered offense, which led the league in scoring during the regular season, the team failed to adapt in the playoffs. Vegas’ 16 goals in four games contrast sharply with Colorado’s meager four, highlighting a stark defensive breakdown. The Avalanche’s 2.10 goals per game average in the regular season dropped to a paltry 1.0 in the series.

MacFarland has a decision to make. The team is in position to run it back with nearly the same roster next season, especially after re-signing Nazem Kadri. However, with this season potentially being the best chance to win another Stanley Cup with this core, MacFarland could see the writing on the wall and consider a move to Nashville.
With the playoffs over and the off-season approaching, Colorado’s front office will need to decide whether to make a major shift. The Avalanche will have until July 15 to finalize any coaching or GM changes.
