The Edmonton Oilers have reportedly shifted their focus from Bruce Cassidy to Mike Babcock as their next head coach. With NHLPA and league approval the only remaining hurdles, Babcock is now considered the top candidate for the position. This sudden pivot raises questions about what changed in just a few days.
Just a week ago, the Oilers were waiting for the Stanley Cup Final to conclude before approaching the Vegas Golden Knights for permission to interview Cassidy. The Golden Knights had shown no signs of releasing their coach, with NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly stating, “We’ll see what happens when the season is over.” That timeline has now been bypassed.
Instead of waiting for clarity on Cassidy, the Oilers have already interviewed Babcock, spoken with players, and could make an official announcement before the Cup Final concludes. This rapid shift suggests a major development in their decision-making process.
What changed? One possibility is financial. Babcock is expected to sign a much shorter and cheaper deal than Cassidy. While the Oilers have already committed $25 million to a three-year extension with assistant coach Kris Knoblauch, a contract with Babcock could cost just $1–$2 million. That makes Babcock a more attractive option for owner Daryl Katz.
Another angle is timing. Babcock has been available for weeks and has no other suitors, meaning the Oilers could have waited for the Cassidy situation to resolve. But they chose not to. That implies a change in perspective, either about Cassidy or about the urgency to hire.

The Oilers also watched John Tortorella lead the Golden Knights to the Cup Final. If they had believed Cassidy was the right fit, this would be a good time to double down. Instead, they moved on.
The timeline of this change is also unclear. While the decision likely wasn’t made in the last 24 hours, it wasn’t set in motion weeks ago either. That raises questions about what new information or pressure prompted the switch.
The Oilers now stand on the brink of a major coaching hire. If approved, Babcock’s appointment could be announced before the Cup Final ends. That would mark a dramatic shift in the Oilers’ search and signal a new direction under new leadership.
