The Toronto Maple Leafs are facing a dilemma many teams would envy: too many NHL-ready goaltenders and not enough roster spots. With Anthony Stolarz, Joseph Woll, Dennis Hildeby, and Artur Akhtyamov all showing promise, the team is at a crossroads where contract timelines, waivers, and development plans are colliding. If not handled carefully, this "good problem" could cost the Leafs a top prospect or a key rotation piece.
Jason Bukala, a Maple Leafs insider, highlighted the issue on *The FAN Hockey Show*, calling it a "real headache fast." The team has more quality goaltending depth than it can reasonably manage under current cap constraints. With only two starting netminders on the active roster and the salary cap tightening in the coming season, Toronto is forced to make difficult decisions.
One of the biggest challenges is the waiver system. Any goalie who is not under contract beyond this season is at risk of being claimed by another team if exposed. Dennis Hildeby, for example, has drawn interest from multiple clubs and is waiver-eligible. If the Leafs try to send him to the minors, another team could claim him for nothing. That’s a risk the organization can’t afford to take.
Timing is also a critical factor. Stolarz’s contract is set to kick in next season, and the Leafs don’t want to sign a second veteran before then. With Woll’s performance fluctuating and Hildeby still in his developmental phase, the Leafs are in a tight window. They must decide whether to commit to one goalie or risk losing another.
Bukala emphasized that goalie development is rarely linear. “You don’t see a goalie fully bloom in one contract,” he said. “It’s often a two-contract cycle.” That timeline makes it even harder to justify keeping multiple young goalies in the system without risking exposure.

The Leafs have taken steps to support their young goalies. Last night, Artur Akhtyamov made his first national start against the New York Islanders. The team gave him full backing, a move Bukala praised as showing “respect for the player and the process.” That kind of confidence is vital when building a goalie’s long-term career.
As the season winds down, the Leafs will need to make a decision on at least one of their goalies. With the trade deadline approaching and the draft just a few months away, Toronto must weigh its options carefully. They can’t afford to lose a key piece without compensation or stall development by keeping too many goalies on the bubble.
Next up for the Maple Leafs is a pivotal week of games and internal meetings. The team is expected to finalize its goalie plans by the end of April, with potential moves on the horizon.
