The Toronto Maple Leafs enter the offseason in a pivotal position, needing a major upgrade on defense to complement their elite forward group and finally push for a Stanley Cup. With Mitch Marner sidelined for much of the season and Craig Berube’s system failing to align with the team’s personnel, the Maple Leafs are looking for a reset. Head coach and general manager John Chayka, alongside president of hockey operations Mats Sundin, now have the chance to reshape the roster, starting with a legitimate No. 1 defenseman.
Winning the 2026 NHL Draft lottery gives Toronto a golden opportunity to add a young star. Gavin McKenna is the top prospect and could immediately slot into the top six. If selected, the 18-year-old could form a dynamic line with Auston Matthews, giving the Maple Leafs one of the most dangerous duos in the league. However, while the draft brings hope, the need to bolster the blue line remains the most pressing task.
Morgan Rielly had his worst season as a pro in 2025-26, posting just 34 points in 82 games. That decline exposed a lack of mobility and puck-moving ability on the Maple Leafs’ defense. Chayka has limited cap space to work with, making a blockbuster trade unlikely. Instead, his focus should be on acquiring a proven top defenseman who can elevate the team’s transition game.
Darren Raddysh emerged as a top free agent option after a breakout season with the Tampa Bay Lightning. The 26-year-old recorded 70 points in 73 games, including 18 goals, showcasing his elite shot and offensive instincts from the blue line. His production came in part on Tampa’s dominant power play, but his two-way ability and hockey IQ make him a perfect fit for Toronto’s system.
Trade targets could include Colton Parayko and Dougie Hamilton. Parayko, 29, didn’t waive his no-trade clause to join the Buffalo Sabres at the deadline, and convincing him to move to Toronto might be difficult. Hamilton, 29, is with the New Jersey Devils but is expected to seek a fresh start. While his production dipped in New Jersey, the 2017 Norris Trophy finalist still has the tools to be a top-four defenseman and could thrive in Toronto.

The Maple Leafs must avoid the trap of trading Rielly for Darnell Nurse. Both are struggling veterans, and Nurse doesn’t bring the offensive upside the team needs. Chayka’s priority is clear: find a mobile, puck-moving defenseman who can elevate the team’s transition game and complement the offensive firepower of Matthews and Marner.
With the draft and free agency just days away, Chayka and Sundin have their work cut out. The Maple Leafs need to act decisively to avoid another playoff disappointment. The next move could define their rebuild, and their chances for years to come.
