The Edmonton Oilers are set to interview Craig Berube for their head coaching position triggering immediate backlash from fans and analysts who fear the move could push star center Connor McDavid toward a trade.
Berube, who was fired by the Toronto Maple Leafs after a disastrous 2025-26 season, is from Alberta and has drawn speculation he could be in the running to replace Bruce Cassidy. However, the timing of the move has fans worried. McDavid is entering the final season of his contract and has shown growing frustration with the team’s direction.
Berube’s tenure with Toronto was one of the worst in recent NHL history. The Leafs ranked dead last in 5v5 goal share at 38% and allowed the most shots per game in the league at 34.2. Their power play went from top five in the 2024 playoffs to a dismal 14% success rate in the regular season. Jonathan Willis of The Leafs Nation called it a “collapse” and said Berube’s system “imploded.”
Fans are not alone in their concerns. Austin Hockey, a prominent Oilers fan voice, said “Berube is someone I wouldn’t even speak to personally.” He added, “If they hire him you can kiss McDavid goodbye within a year.”
Arun Srinivasan of The Leafs Nation pointed out that Berube’s coaching style clashes with McDavid and Leon Draisaitl’s cerebral approach. “I don’t know how much patience McDavid will have when Berube suggests his team didn’t transport the puck going north-south well enough,” Srinivasan said.
While some are quick to dismiss Berube, others acknowledge his success in St. Louis. The Blues went 48-24-10 in the 2024-25 season under Berube, earning a playoff berth for the first time since 2019. However, critics argue that St. Louis is a small-market team with a defensive identity, while Edmonton is built around speed, skill, and possession.

Charlie O’Connor noted the Toronto comparison. “It’s tough for me to imagine him delivering the results in St. Louis that he did if he was actually bad,” he said. “But as far as stylistic & situational team comps for Edmonton go, Toronto is probably the closest, no? And Berube clearly didn’t work there…”
The Oilers have not confirmed if they plan to hire Berube or if the interview is a tactic to pressure Cassidy, who is currently with the Boston Bruins, for a quicker decision. Either way, the optics are bad.
With the July 1 NHL free agency deadline approaching, the Oilers must decide quickly whether to retain McDavid or risk losing him to another team. The coaching situation has become a major factor in a high-stakes summer ahead.
