The Toronto Maple Leafs are reportedly in the mix for T.J. Hughes, a 24-year-old forward who just completed his NCAA career at the University of Michigan. After the Wolverines' run to the Frozen Four ended, Hughes became an unrestricted free agent and is now free to sign with any NHL team. Known for his two-way play and leadership, Hughes could offer the Leafs a reliable, NHL-ready option at forward.
Hughes played 40 games for Michigan this season, recording 57 points. That total ranked among the top 15 in the NCAA and earned him the team's captaincy. Prior to his college career, he put up 127 points in just 60 games with the Brooks Bandits of the AJHL. His production continued at the next level and now he's ready to make the jump to the pros.
Toronto’s forward depth has been a concern, particularly in the middle-six. With players like Ilya Mikheyev and Nick Ritchie on expiring contracts, the Leafs could use a player who can step in and contribute right away. Hughes fits that mold. He’s a right-shot forward with good size and a strong two-way game, making him ideal for penalty kill duty and top-four minutes.
Matthew Knies is a recent example of a college free agent who made the transition to the NHL. Knies signed with the Oilers after his NCAA season and became a valuable contributor. Hughes could follow a similar path, especially if he signs with a team that gives him a real shot.
The Leafs have the appeal, and Hughes is likely a fan of the organization, but they must show commitment. If Toronto offers more than just a two-way deal and a handshake, they could land him. Otherwise, teams like the Oilers or others in need of depth could swoop in.

Hughes is not a long-term project. He’s a player who has already proven himself in junior and college hockey. At 24, he’s mature and ready for the next step. For the Leafs, he represents a low-risk, high-upside addition who could help now or in the near future.
Free agency for college players like Hughes officially begins April 11. Teams have a short window to secure his services. The Leafs need to act quickly if they want to add a player who can fill a real need on their roster.

The San Antonio Spurs edged the Dallas Mavericks 114-109 on Friday night, but the story was not the win. It was Victor Wembanyama’s 40-point, 13-rebound performance in just 26 minutes, a calculated move to reach the 65-game threshold required for regular-season award eligibility.
