The Detroit Red Wings have pulled off a blockbuster trade with the Anaheim Ducks, sending captain Dylan Larkin to the West Coast in exchange for forward Mason McTavish and free agent acquisition Alex Tuch. The move signals a major shift in Detroit’s rebuild strategy as general manager Steve Yzerman aims to reshape the roster with youth and scoring depth.
Larkin, who was set to carry a $8.7 million cap hit over the next two seasons, is now a Ducks player. In return, the Red Wings gain a more dynamic offensive threat in McTavish, who is coming off a 52-point season in 82 games and is on a cheaper $3.4 million cap hit. Detroit also lands Tuch, who signed a three-year, $17 million deal with the team, bringing size, speed, and playoff-ready production to the top six.
This trade frees up nearly $8.3 million in cap space for the Red Wings, allowing Yzerman to restructure the team around its young core. That group includes Lucas Raymond, Moritz Seider, and Simon Edvinsson, who are all in their prime developmental years and forming the foundation of Detroit’s future.
McTavish is expected to step into a top-six role immediately, while Tuch will pair with DeBrincat and Raymond to form a more aggressive, top-heavy attack. Tuch averaged 20 goals and 42 points in 82 games last season, making him a high-impact addition for a team that struggled to score consistently in 2024-25.
The Ducks, meanwhile, gain cap flexibility as they pursue free agents Leo Carlsson and Cutter Gauthier. However, the move to acquire Larkin may not be permanent. Anaheim is expected to flip Larkin in a three-team trade, using his contract to absorb salary from another team while clearing space for their defensive upgrades.

For Detroit, the Larkin trade is the first step in a multi-pronged rebuild. With McTavish and Tuch now in the fold, the Red Wings have added two offensive weapons while shedding a costly veteran. The team’s cap flexibility and young core now give them a clearer path to contention.
Next, Yzerman will turn his attention to the draft and free agency, with the goal of making the Red Wings a playoff team by 2027.
