The Texas Rangers designated Andrew McCutchen for assignment and signed utility infielder Nicky Lopez to a major league contract ahead of tonight’s game against the Houston Astros. The move comes after McCutchen struggled in a limited role this season and with Lopez becoming available after clearing waivers with the Chicago Cubs.
The Rangers announced Lopez’s signing and immediately activated him for tonight’s contest against right-hander Mike Burrows. Lopez, who signed a minor league deal with the Cubs last week, elected free agency after being designated for assignment and quickly found a new home with Texas. A veteran of five MLB teams, Lopez brings defensive versatility to a middle infield that has been inconsistent this season.
McCutchen, a five-time All-Star, signed a minor league contract with the Rangers midway through Spring Training. He made the Opening Day roster with a strong spring and secured a $1.25 million salary for the season. However, McCutchen has hit just .192 with one home run in 83 plate appearances. His on-base percentage remains elite at .382, but his .290 slugging percentage reflects a sharp decline in power production.
The 36-year-old has seen his offensive output drop for four straight seasons. Last year with the Pirates, McCutchen hit .256 with a .354 OBP and 13 home runs in 551 plate appearances. This season, he’s striking out at a career-high 19.3% rate while producing no extra-base hits beyond that single home run.
Texas has five days to trade McCutchen or place him on waivers. If sent to the minors, McCutchen could refuse the assignment and become a free agent while retaining his salary. The more likely scenario is a release, which would allow other teams to pursue him for the prorated league minimum.
Lopez, 31, offers defensive flexibility at second and third base. He owns a career .245/.309/.310 slash line over 2,396 career plate appearances. Though not a power threat, he brings defensive reliability and experience. Lopez made just four bench appearances with the Cubs but was a standout defensively in the minors.
Texas has struggled with middle infield production, relying on Ezequiel Duran and Justin Foscue, who committed a costly error Sunday. Lopez could see playing time until Josh Smith and Corey Seager return from injury.
The Rangers face the Astros tonight at 7:10 PM CT. A decision on McCutchen’s future is expected within the five-day waiver window.
