The Los Angeles Sparks edged the Portland Fire 84-79 at Crypto.com Arena on Sunday, June 7, in a hard-fought Western Conference battle. Kelsey Plum led the way with 22 points and six assists, while Cameron Brink added a double-double with 14 points and seven rebounds. Bridget Carleton paced the Fire with 19 points, but her team struggled to maintain momentum in the fourth quarter.
Portland came in with high hopes as an expansion team, but the Sparks’ home-court advantage and defensive intensity proved too much. The Fire shot 38% from three-point range, with Carleton hitting four of her six attempts, but Los Angeles held a 44-34 rebounding edge and secured 14 offensive boards. Brink’s shot-blocking presence disrupted Portland’s driving lanes, a key factor in LA’s 10-2 edge in fast-break points.
Plum, who is averaging 21.5 points per game this season, was at her best in the clutch. She scored six of her points in the final frame, including a crucial three-pointer with 2:10 remaining to stretch the Sparks’ lead to six. “She’s the kind of player who takes over games like this,” said one analyst, “and tonight was no different.”
Portland’s Carla Leite was a steady hand off the ball, dishing out six assists and scoring 12 points. Dearica Hamby added 13 points and eight rebounds off the bench for Los Angeles, which improved to 12-6 on the season. The Fire, meanwhile, dropped to 4-14 and remain winless in their road games this year.
The Sparks built a seven-point lead at halftime and never let it slip below four in the second half. A 9-2 run in the third quarter, fueled by Plum and Brink, gave them the separation they needed to close the game out. Portland’s best stretch came in the second quarter, when they outscored LA 18-15 behind a 5-0 three-point barrage.
Defensively, the Sparks held the Fire to just 18 points in the fourth quarter, limiting their second-chance opportunities and forcing 15 turnovers. LA’s interior defense, led by Brink’s three blocks in the final frame, was the difference in a game that was closer than the final score suggested.
With the win, Los Angeles moves into a tie for second place in the Western Conference. The Sparks will look to build on this momentum when they host the Seattle Storm on Wednesday. Portland, still searching for their first road win, will return home to face the Chicago Sky on Friday.
