The Cincinnati Bengals entered the 2026 NFL Draft with a clear vision: replenish their defense and add young, versatile talent. They landed on three players who could immediately impact the roster and one who could be a long-term project. With a revamped linebacker corps and a potential breakout edge rusher, the Bengals are positioning themselves for a defensive resurgence.
Demetrius Knight, a second-round pick out of South Carolina, is the most promising of the group. The 6-foot-2, 235-pound linebacker brings a physical run-stuffing presence and solid coverage instincts. In 2024, he recorded 82 tackles and two sacks for the Gamecocks. Knight also impressed at the Senior Bowl and in other pre-draft workouts. His combination of size, strength, and football IQ makes him a prime candidate to step into a starting role by 2026. With veterans like Germaine Pratt and Logan Wilson possibly moving on, Knight could be the next in line to lead the defense.
On the other side of the coin, third-round pick Dylan Fairchild is the biggest question mark. The Georgia guard had flashes of potential but never dominated in college. Standing at 6-foot-4 and 315 pounds, Fairchild has the size to play on the interior but lacks the power and consistency to anchor a run defense. He recorded just 16 career starts and never exceeded 45 tackles in a season. As a project, Fairchild could develop into a backup or even a starter, but he carries the most risk of the Bengals' early-round selections.

Perhaps the most intriguing pick is Shemar Stewart, a second-round defensive end from Texas A&M. Stewart is a physical specimen with elite speed and first-step quickness. He recorded 4.5 sacks in 2024 and has the potential to be a disruptive edge rusher. However, his college production does not match his physical tools. Stewart needs to refine his technique and improve his football IQ. If he can develop, he could become a game-winner for Cincinnati and help ease the pressure on Trey Hendrickson.
Rounding out the class is fourth-round linebacker Barrett Carter from Clemson. A skilled zone coverage player, Carter struggled in run defense but showed promise in space. He recorded 64 tackles and three pass breakups in 2024. While he may not start right away, Carter could be a valuable rotational piece and special teams contributor.

The Bengals now turn their attention to the 2026 season, where these rookies will begin to make their mark. With a young, hungry defense and a veteran quarterback in Joe Burrow, the stage is set for a breakout year in Cincinnati.
