The Colorado Avalanche’s coaching situation is heating up as speculation grows that David Carle could replace Jared Bednar if the team falters in the playoffs. With the team struggling to close out a series against Vegas, fans and media are already discussing potential changes. While Bednar has led the Avalanche to a Stanley Cup Final and three consecutive playoff appearances, a rough exit could trigger a coaching shakeup.
Carle’s name is gaining traction due to his strong ties to Denver and his success at the University of Denver. He has led the Pioneers to three NCAA tournament appearances in five seasons and helped develop NHL-ready talent like Bowen Byram and Evan Vierling. His familiarity with Colorado hockey culture and his reputation as a top-tier college coach make him a logical candidate for a team looking to rebuild and develop young stars like Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar.
But swapping Bednar for Carle is anything but simple. Bednar has been with the Avalanche since 2018 and has overseen a 45–30–7 record in the regular season this year. His team finished first in the Central Division with a 52–22–10 record and a 5.28 goals for per game average. Those numbers speak to a stable system and a winning culture that Carle, who has never coached in the NHL, would have to replace overnight.
Carle is also a selective hire. College coaching offers control and stability, while the NHL coaching job is a high-pressure, high-turnover role. Teams like the New York Rangers and Toronto Maple Leafs have shown interest in Bednar already, meaning any decision must come quickly. If the Avalanche lose to Vegas in a lopsided fashion, the pressure to act could become impossible to ignore.

The Avalanche’s next step is Game 4 of the series against the Golden Knights. If they fail to gain momentum, the coaching conversation could shift from rumor to reality. The team has until the end of the series to decide whether to stick with Bednar or make a bold move. With Nathan MacKinnon’s status still uncertain, every game is a must-win.

The Oklahoma City Thunder defeated the San Antonio Spurs 127-114 in Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals to take a 3-2 series lead. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led the way with 32 points and nine assists, anchoring a balanced Thunder attack that outlasted the Spurs on the road.
