John Tortorella’s impressive run with the Vegas Golden Knights has sparked speculation about his next coaching destination. With the Oilers and Maple Leafs both open for a new bench boss, Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman asked if either team might consider the 67-year-old veteran for their head coaching job.
Tortorella took over for Bruce Cassidy in late March and led the Golden Knights to a 7-0-1 record in the regular season before posting a 14-8 mark in the playoffs. His efforts brought Vegas all the way to the Stanley Cup Final, where they fell in six games to a strong Carolina Hurricanes squad. The success has put him back in the spotlight as one of the top coaching candidates in the NHL.
Friedman noted that “someone’s going to hire that guy (John Tortorella), he just did an incredible job… With Tortorella, there’s two teams that have coaching openings right now. You know Edmonton, but so does Toronto.”
The Oilers are in a critical window with stars like Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl entering their prime. Tortorella’s veteran leadership and track record of success could be exactly what Edmonton needs. Meanwhile, the Maple Leafs remain a work in progress around Auston Matthews and William Nylander, making a coaching hire like Tortorella a potential long-term fit if Toronto plans to compete for a Stanley Cup soon.

Tortorella has said he’s the coach until June 30 and is “anxious to see what comes next.” That statement has only fueled the speculation. While he has a number of potential options, the attention is on Edmonton and Toronto as the two most likely destinations.
As the NHL’s free agent market opens in July, Tortorella’s future will become clearer. The next few weeks will determine if the Oilers or Maple Leafs make a move to bring him aboard.
