The Edmonton Oilers are considering a bold move as they prepare to name their next head coach. With Mike Babcock’s future in question due to an ongoing NHL investigation into his 2023 actions in Columbus, the Oilers are exploring alternative options. One name that has surfaced is Darryl Sutter, a two-time Stanley Cup-winning coach and native of Alberta.
Sutter, 67, has not been behind the bench since the 2022-23 season when he coached the Calgary Flames for parts of three seasons. He previously led the Los Angeles Kings to back-to-back championships in 2011-12 and 2013-14. Known for his hard-nosed, physical style, Sutter could bring a new identity to the Oilers’ high-octane offense led by Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.
NHL insider Frank Seravalli suggested Sutter as a potential candidate, noting the limited options left for the Oilers. “If not Cassidy, if not Babcock, Lavvy’s already gone. Prepare yourself for the possibility of Darryl Sutter,” Seravalli said. “I’m just saying you’re going to have to get creative now if you’re the Edmonton Oilers…”
Sutter’s connection to Alberta is strong. During the 2022 Battle of Alberta, he told McDavid in the handshake line, “Go do it for Alberta.” That moment highlighted the pride he carries for the region and could be a compelling reason for the Oilers to consider him.
The Oilers have already seen their coaching options shrink. Bruce Cassidy is considered unlikely to take the job, while Peter Laviolette is now with the Kings. Babcock remains a possibility, but the NHL’s investigation into his conduct could delay or derail the hiring process.
Sutter’s return to the NHL would not come without challenges. He has been away from the game for three full seasons, and it is unclear whether he has the desire to return. However, the opportunity to coach McDavid and Draisaitl in a bid to win a Stanley Cup could be too tempting to pass up.
The Oilers are in a critical window to win with their core. They have made the playoffs in each of the past five seasons but have yet to lift the Stanley Cup. A coaching change could be the spark they need to break through.
The Oilers are expected to make a decision soon as the 2026-27 season approaches. Whether they turn to Sutter, Babcock, or someone else, the choice will shape the next chapter in Edmonton’s pursuit of hockey’s biggest prize.

The Edmonton Oilers are looking to make a major move in the goaltending market this offseason as they aim to rebound from a first-round playoff exit. With head coach Mike Babcock and general manager Stan Bowman under scrutiny, the Oilers are expected to pursue a proven starter to pair with Connor Mc
